Part Seven-
Miataga blinked, unsure he really had heard what he thought he heard. “Did you pay my master for me?”
“Yes.”
“Then why wouldn’t we have sex?” He didn’t understand.
“Just because I paid for you doesn’t mean I have control over you.” Ari held up his hand to keep Miataga from speaking. “That is my belief. I know, it’s not how others would feel. I paid for you because it was the only way I could get someone to come with me. The masters of the Loving Houses don’t allow their workers to leave. I was informed by my fellow soldiers when I commented about taking someone home with me.”
The word ‘home’ hit Miataga. “We’re going to your home?”
Ari lifted one shoulder in a shrug. “Only for a few days. Then we’ll be leaving to go to Vikex’ flock. I don’t spend much time with my family anymore. I come from simple folk. They didn’t understand why I left. Mostly because I couldn’t tell them what was calling me away. I didn’t know that it was Vikex.”
He touched Ari’s chest, feeling the beat of his heart. “Your people didn’t know anything about the war birds and how they keep Emmen safe?”
“No. We aren’t really part of the Emmenian empire, or at least we don’t consider ourselves to be. So we don’t pay attention to what’s happening there.” Ari frowned. “They’re afraid of Vikex and don’t know how to treat him while we’re there. He usually spends the few days we’re there up on the peaks of the mountain. It’s not ideal for him, but he deals because he knows that we’ll be spending a majority of our leave in the Westerlys with his flock.”
“We’ll get to see more phoenix like him?” He pursed his lips. Was that the right word for more than one phoenix?
“They will be there. Unlike Vikex, they never leave the mountains where they were born. As I said before, it’s rare for them to bond with men.” Ari stroked the feathers of Vikex’ neck. “I was one of the lucky ones.”
Miataga shivered and Ari drew him closer. “I can’t believe you chose me and I’ll get to see them as well. I get the feeling that not many humans see them.”
Ari rested his chin on the top of Miataga’s head. “You’re right. The only reason I get to is because I’m bonded with Vikex. They live high up in the mountains. They give off a lot of heat, so we won’t have to worry about freezing.”
“How is that possible,” Miataga murmured.
“I’m not sure. It might have something to do with their relationship with fire. Phoenix live for a hundred years then when their time is up, they burn to death. Once the flames die down and the ashes cool, an egg appears. In three days, the phoenix will hatch and be reborn.” Ari sighed. “When they die, it’s very beautiful.”
Miataga didn’t move from where he’d snuggled against Ari. “How can you hear me?”
Ari chuckled. “It’s the way the wind blows and these helmets help magnify sounds. We need ways to communicate with each other while we’re flying.”
It made sense. Miataga wondered how the giant birds had come to be and when had the decision made to train them for battle. He ran his hand along Ari’s thigh while he thought. The muscles flexed under his fingers and he smiled. For the first time in his life, he was anticipating the sex. Something told him it wouldn’t be as awful as some of his nights were.
He liked sex as much as the next guy, which might have seemed odd when he had been forced to chose being a pleasure worker instead of choosing it. To be honest, some of his customers were rather nice guys just looking for some kind of connection. Most of them were assholes who only wanted to fuck him and didn’t care about his feelings or needs. A couple of them got rough from time to time.
Yet the way Ari acted made Miataga think sex with the commander wouldn’t be like that. He’d never had a customer tell him he didn’t have to fuck him if he didn’t want to. Not that he’d turn Ari down. Miataga found Ari the most attractive person he’d ever seen and he was more than willing to do whatever Ari asked.
“Are you from Sendler?” Ari’s question drifted down to him on the wind.
“Born and raised in the lower part of the city. My mother was a pleasure worker at one of the Loving Houses. One of her more frequent customers fathered me. I ran errands and helped around the House where she worked until I was deemed old enough, then I started plying the family trade.” His harsh laugh echoed on the breeze. “I’ve never left the lower city. This is the furthest I’ve ever been in my life. Each mile we go will broaden my horizons even more. I’m looking forward to it.”
Ari rested one of his hands at the base of Miataga’s spine. “Stay with me and I’ll show you so many things, beautiful and amazing things in this world. We don’t have to go back there for two months. Tell me, are there places you want to see or things you want to do? I will grant your every wish for as long as we’re together.”
My every wish? How wonderful it would be if he really meant it. Miataga had heard thousand of pretty promises from the men who visited the Loving House. How they wanted to take him from there. They wanted to give him jewels and fancy clothes. A nice house in a better part of town. The one thing they didn’t want to do was take him places where people could see them together.
Those men would’ve hidden him away like a precious gem, taking him out only so they could look at him—or fuck him whenever they wanted.

Part Six-
Miataga’s chest began to burn as he realized he’d forgotten to breath. He gulped in fresh air while clinging to the Commander. His heart raced with a hint of fear, yet his gaze was drawn to the land rapidly falling away from under them.
“Everything looks so small,” he commented, not sure if the Commander could hear him. “How can you ever want to walk the earth after being up here, Commander?”
“Please call me Ari.” The Commander’s voice rumbled in his chest and against Miataga’s cheek.
“You may call me Miataga, if you wish.” His customers rarely called him by his name. Most of them didn’t even know or ask what his name was. All they cared about was his ass or his mouth.
Ari shifted just a little and Vikex turned more right in the direction of the Easterly Mountains.
“It will be my pleasure to have the honor of calling you by your name. In answer to your question, it’s very difficult for me, but I can’t survive up here for long. I have to eat and Vikex needs to rest from time to time.”
He nodded. “Makes sense, but it’s so beautiful to be up here away from all the people and problems.”
“True. As long as you’re not in the middle of a battle, it’s peaceful,” Ari replied and smoothed his hand down Miataga’s back. “Are you warm enough?”
Miataga thought for a second. He hadn’t even noticed the chill until Ari asked. He snuggled a little closer to the commander and let the man’s heat burn the iciness away. “Yes, I’m fine.” Another thought shot through his head. “You aren’t the Supreme Commander, are you?”
“No.” Ari shook his head. “The Supreme Commander bonds with a golden eagle. I’m considered unique because of Vikex, but nothing more than a mere commander in the army.”
“I didn’t think so. The Supreme Commander wouldn’t lower himself to come to the lower city for a whore. If he’d wanted one, he would’ve had one of us brought to him,” Miataga murmured. “Why did you come and pick me?”
He could feel the movement of Ari’s shoulders, so he assumed the man shrugged.
“I’m not entirely sure why I picked you, though you were the first one I noticed when I walked into your establishment. It must have been the hair.” Ari tugged on the ends of Miataga’s hair. “Flames like Vikex’s feathers. I can’t believe I had the courage to ask you to come with me.”
Miataga snorted. “Why would you need courage for that? I’m a whore. I can’t very well tell you no.”
Ari buried his fingers in Miataga’s hair, rubbing the strands between his thumb and forefinger. “You’re beautiful and I’m not.”
Pushing back slightly, Miataga looked up to meet Ari’s gaze. “Are you kidding? I’ve never seen anyone who looks like you. Your bright gold eyes. I haven’t even really seen your face and I know you’re stunning. Even if you’re ugly, it wouldn’t matter to me. I’m the one person who knows that looks aren’t everything. I’ve had the most handsome men come to the Loving House. They would pick me then treat me like trash.”
He watched Ari drop his gaze to the side then back at him. “That was wrong of them. Like I said, you shouldn’t be treated bad just because you’re a whore.”
“Yet those handsome men think that because I sell my body, they have every right to treat me however they want. They might be beautiful on the outside, but their insides are uglier than the ragmen that dig through the garbage of Lower City.” Miataga wrinkled his nose before he reached up to touch Ari’s jaw under the helmet. “Will I be able to see your face soon?”
Ari covered his hand then pressed a kiss in Miataga’s palm. “Yes. Vikex will need to rest in another hour or so, and we’ll find a place to land. Once I set up our tent and make us a meal, you can see my face. I hope it doesn’t upset you.”
Miataga slid his hand around the back of Ari’s head, playing a little with the curls not covered by Ari’s helmet. He drew the commander’s mouth down to his then pressed their lips together. Thank God, Vikex can steer himself. Sweeping his tongue inside, Miataga hummed at the spicy flavor he tasted. He kept the kiss quick and light. He didn’t want to start something they couldn’t finish.
Can we have sex while flying through the air? It might be more dangerous than I’m willing to try. Not that Vikex would let us do that anyway.
His giggle broke the kiss and Ari drew away from him to give him a puzzled look. “Was kissing me that funny?”
Shaking his head, Miataga giggled again before taking a deep breath. “No. I was just wondering if we could have sex while flying.”
Vikex screeched and flipped his tail, causing Ari to grab a hold of Miataga.
“I take that as a no,” Miataga commented then laughed again.
“Vikex wouldn’t like that, though I’ll be honest and say that there’s never been anyone I’d ever considered thinking about it with.” Ari patted Vikex’s shoulder. “Not that I’d disrespect him like that.”
“Oh, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean anything by it. Just a silly thought running through my head.” Miataga worried Vikex might be upset with him. He twisted to look over at the phoenix.
He saw Vikex peer back at him, and he swore the bird winked. How much did the phoenix understand of the human world? Not that it mattered. He was more concerned with Ari. Turning back, he smiled at Ari.
“It was just a thought, but here’s another. We will be having sex at some point right? I mean, that is why you asked me to come with you, right? And where are we going? Not that it matters either. I can’t very well make my way back without Vikex.”
Ari looked a little unnerved as he swallowed. “There will only be sex if you want there to be. Just because you get paid to sell your body doesn’t mean you don’t have a choice. If you don’t want us to sleep together, you can be just my companion on my journey home.”

Part Five-
“He is very loud, but you will get used to it, I’m sure. Put your hands around me while we fly. If you become scared, close your eyes and hide your face against my chest.”
Two slender arms embraced him, resting at the small of his back. He’d never been so overwhelmed with sensations. Heat and need roiled through him. Vikex turned to glance back at him, curiosity and a strange understanding shining in the phoenix’s golden eyes. Even after eight years, Ari had no idea just how much the phoenix understood. He had a feeling Vikex didn’t let him know everything. The bird had its own idea of what was important enough for his human companion to know.
He tensed as soft lips brushed over his chest, heading towards one of his nipples. Ari silently cursed his habit of not wearing a uniform. He didn’t feel the cold like his fellow soldiers, so more often than not, he wore a very thin layer of clothing that his servants created for him. Unfortunately, it didn’t stop him from feeling everything. Of course, he never allowed anyone to touch him like this whore was.
Ari slid his hand up over Miataga’s shoulder, planning on pushing the man away, but his body had another idea. His hand tangled in Miataga’s bright red curls and he pulled back, exposing Miataga’s mouth to his. He brushed their lips together.
The first touch jolted him, sending electricity through his nerves. Miataga swept his tongue into Ari’s mouth and the commander jumped, unsure what to do. He’d never kissed anyone before and being a whore, Miataga had probably kissed hundreds of men.
Stop thinking of him as a whore. Being a prostitute was merely Miataga’s job. It didn’t tell Ari anything about the man’s heart or soul. He was taught never to judge anyone until he learned their character. Ari already knew that Miataga was brave and beautiful. Anything else would have to wait.
Vikex shrieked again and they broke apart.
“You’re right, mate. We must go now or something will happen and we’ll be stuck here.” He looked down at Miataga.
The man’s lips were swollen and his eyes hazy with desire. Ari wanted to ask if Miataga really wanted him or was he just doing what whores did to convince their customer they were enjoying themselves.
“Please, may we leave?” Miataga’s breathy voice brushed over Ari’s chest. “I want to fly.”
“You heard the gentleman, Vikex. Let’s fly.” Ari patted Vikex on shoulder.
The phoenix launched its large body into the air and Ari felt the familiar rush of the earth dropping away. Miataga gave a little squeak, tightening his grip on Ari’s waist, but he didn’t hide his eyes.
Yes, Miataga had courage as well.

Part Four-
He jumped when the commander threw back his head and a wild cry burst forth. He shuddered as a fierce yearning ripped through him. A yearning to be free and to be able to fly the skies without having to submit to anyone. An answering cry came from the sky and he lifted his eyes to watch for the commander’s bond mate.
#
Ari shot a glance at the man he had commanded to come with him. What kind of fool was he to think such a beautiful being would want to have anything to do with him? He should never have listened in on the conversation between two of his men. They talked about the Loving Houses down in the lower part of the city and the whores who worked in them. He had been appalled to know that a whole class of people was trapped in a society where they had to sell their bodies.
Shaking his head, he turned to see Vikex gracefully dropping from the sky. The society of Emmen disgusted and intrigued him. The Easterly Mountains had no lines dividing their people. They had no rich and poor; no slaves and masters. Mostly they had no whores that he knew of. Maybe he had been too sheltered before he was called to Emmen and his destiny.
Vikex landed and shook his feathers out, sparks flying from the tips of his wings. Ari heard the whore gasp and smiled. His bond mate was a beautiful creature. Bright yellow gold at the base of the feathers, Vikex’s wings spanned almost the entire flight field. Vikex’s golden eyes looked from him to the man standing next to him.
He took the man’s hand in his and held it out to his bond mate. “Vikex, this is…” He stopped when he realized he had never asked the man’s name.
“Miataga,” the man whispered.
“Miataga, this is my bond mate, Vikex. He will be traveling with us to our home, mate. We must take care of him.” He ran Miataga’s hand over the warm feathers on Vikex’s breast.
“What type of bird is he? I have never seen one so beautiful or so large.” There was a hint of fear in Miataga’s voice, but the hand touching the bird didn’t shake. “He’s so warm.”
“Vikex is one of the phoenix that live in the Westerly Mountains. They are very rare and only chose to bond with men once in a generation. That is why I came here. Vikex called me and I had to find my destiny.”
“A phoenix?” The surprise and awe in Miataga’s face made Ari laughed.
“You’ve never heard any legends of the phoenix?” He checked to make sure the riding pad sat just right on Vikex’s back. He didn’t want the bird getting any sores from their long flight. He needed to get away from this city.
“My instructors didn’t think the legends of our people were important lessons for a whore to learn.” Miataga’s voice was matter-of-fact.
“It’s wrong to allow anyone to be ignorant of their past, be he whore or rich man.” Ari mounted Vikex and offered his hand to Miataga.
“It’s a different world than where you lived, Commander. How long have you lived in Emmen?”
Miataga’s small hand joined with Ari’s and he lifted the man onto Vikex’s back. Ari placed him before him, so he could keep his arms wrapped around the younger man and insure he didn’t fall off during the flight.
He bit back a groan as Miataga’s firm ass rubbed against his groin while the whore wiggled around to get comfortable. The sting of his teeth on his lip jolted him back to what Miataga had asked him.
“I’ve been here for eight years.” He leaned forward, doing his best to ignore the woodsy scent drifting off Miataga’s red hair. “Vikex, are you ready?”
Vikex’s scream caused Miataga to jump and Air chuckled.
Part Three-
“Paster,” the commander bellowed out.
A young man dressed in the browns and green of an army courier materialized beside the commander. “Yes, sir?”
“I need a winter coat.” Dosterta glanced down at Miataga’s elegant slippers. “Also, a pair of boots. Bring them to Flight Field Eight.”
“Yes, sir.” Paster saluted and dashed away.
“We must walk a little further. I’ve nothing to keep you warm with except my own body. Would you allow me to put my arm around your shoulder?” Dosterta’s voice was polite and neutral.
Miataga was struck speechless. Who was this man that he would ask a whore’s permission before he touched him? He nodded and almost groaned as Dosterta’s arm slid around his shoulder and tucked him into the commander’s side. It wasn’t until the warmth invaded his body that Miataga realized how cold he was.
Winter was settling in around the country and the wind was bitter. His light silk shirt and cotton pants were no hindrance to the cold.
He sighed and snuggled closer to Dosterta. “Your uniform must keep you warm.”
“I’m used to temperatures colder than this. I was born high in the Easterly Mountains where winter comes early and leaves late.” Dosterta’s voice held a twinge of the rough accent Miataga had heard when he had serviced Easterly tradesmen.
“The Easterlies aren’t a part of Emmen. Why would you come here to serve in the army?” He asked though he knew he could be punished for it. Few people appreciated an intelligent whore.
“It was Vikex who called me here.” As Dosterta stopped and dropped his arm, Paster arrived.
“Sir, I brought a coat and boots. I took the liberty of bringing a pair of gloves and a scarf. If you plan on leaving on the wing, then he should be warm.” Paster nodded towards Miataga.
“Thank you, Paster. Inform the quartermaster to take it out of my pay. Now go back to bed, son. I’ll see you in a month or two.” Dosterta ordered the young man away.
Miataga watched the young courier raced away. When he brought his gaze back, he almost fell over at the sight of Dosterta kneeling on the ground in front of him.
“No, Commander. I can put my boots on myself.” He protested as Dosterta picked up his foot. He had to reach out and grab hold of the commander’s shoulders or he would have toppled over. A moan of pleasure ripped through him at the touch of the warm silky material.
A shudder ran down the spine of the commander. He wondered at that. None of the other men he had serviced ever enjoyed his touch. They were quick to get in and get it done. There was no build up and no enjoyment of it. He moaned again as the commander slipped off his slipper and ran a finger over the arch of his foot.
“Put your foot on my thigh while I unlace the boots.” Dosterta placed his foot on the thick muscles of his thighs.
Heat swelled over his foot and headed right to his groin. His cock hardened and began to throb. He had never gotten turned on by a man from just simply touching him. His fingers crept up to stroke the vulnerable neck left bare by the commander’s bowed head. He knew his fingertips were soft like a woman’s. He traced small circles and the commander sighed.
“I’d let you do that all day, but it’s cold and you need to be warm.” Dosterta tugged one boot on and laced it up. He quickly did the same with the other of Miataga’s boots. Standing, his eyes burned with desire and he leaned forward.
“I want to kiss you, Commander,” Miataga whispered. “Take off your mask, so I may touch your lips.”
Dosterta jerked away from him with a flare of fear in his eyes. Shaking his head, the commander moved a few feet from him. “Put on your coat and scarf. If you wish to wear the gloves, you may. I must call Vikex, so we may leave.”
Miataga wondered what had caused the fear in the commander’s eyes. If not for that flash, he would have thought Dosterta was disgusted by the thought of kissing him. Not many men wanted to kiss their whores. It was considered too intimate a gesture to waste on someone they paid for sex.
Sighing, he wound the scarf around his neck and tucked the ends in under the wool coat he slipped on. Both the scarf and coat were thick and warm. They were made from the hair of the mountain goats raised on the Easterly Mountains and imported by merchants to sell in Emmen. His coat and scarf had been dyed a golden color to match the commander’s uniform. Miataga stroked the soft material and thought about touching the commander’s skin. His cock surged to life and hardened. Looking up, he noticed Dosterta had moved off a little ways.

Part Two-
“Are you still coming?” The question was soft and undemanding.
Miataga turned back to see the commander was standing a few feet from him. There was nothing in the man’s voice or body posture that told him the commander was going to force him to come.
“Yes. I was saying good-bye.” He moved down to join the other man.
“Why?” The commander glided towards the Wing’s barracks.
Following, Miataga tried not to gawk. He had never ventured out of the lower city of Spendler where the whores and slaves lived. His customers came to him and they would use one of the rooms at the Loving House. Without an escort, he wasn’t allowed to travel into the upper part of town where the soldiers and the politic leaders of Emmen lived. He shot a glance over at the commander striding next to him. What ranking did the stranger hold?
The skin-tight gold uniform told him nothing. There were no rank markings on the helmet where the commanders usually wore their stars with honor. They halted at a gate blocking the entrance to the barracks. Miataga became entranced by the gleaming and rippling gold of the commander’s uniform. It called to his hands to stroke. Before he thought of the consequences of touching a soldier without his permission, he trailed his hand down the shoulder of the man standing in front of him. The warmth and smoothness of it shocked him. He hadn’t realized the weavers had created material that felt so much like human skin. A muffled sound came from the man when he rubbed his hand over the shoulder again.
“I’m sorry, Commander.” He dropped his hand and lowered his head.
“My name is Ari.” The commander’s voice was rough with desire and surprise laced through it.
“Commander Dosterta, I thought you had left for the evening.” A young soldier saluted to the golden man as they walked through the gate.
“I’m back to get Vikex, then we’ll be on leave for several weeks.” Returning the salute, Ari ignored the look of disgust the young soldier sent towards Miataga.
Miataga was used to those looks. Soldiers and political leaders had only one use for the whores down in the Loving Houses. Other than for sex, they didn’t socialize with each other and he liked it that way. The thin veneer of civilization hanging over the commanders couldn’t hide the wildness racing through their blood. It was part of the bonding between the commanders and their weapons.
The Emmenian armies’ specialized weapons were huge birds of prey that lived in the Westerly Mountains. The lowest ranking commanders bonded with falcons and hawks. The higher ranks were for the eagles. The Supreme Commander of the Emmenian army always bonded with the largest of the birds, the golden eagle.
Miataga’s eyes went wide at the thought. He threw a quick glance at the golden man beside him. He cast the thought away. The Supreme Commander would never get a whore from the lower city to service him.
“Forgive the boy. He hasn’t had good manners beaten into him yet.” Commander Dosterta’s voice was loud enough for the soldier to hear.
Miataga caught a glimpse of the soldier’s red face before he dropped his gaze again. “It’s all right.”
“It’s never right to treat anyone-be he whore, slave or the Supreme Commander-as if he were dirt beneath your feet.” Dosterta’s voice was cold.
Miataga shivered and he started to apologize again. A gentle hand on his arm stopped him.
“No more.” The slender fingers traced over his cool skin. “I gave you no time to grab your coat when we left your House. That was unforgivably cruel of me.”
Miataga shrugged. “I have no coat, Commander, so you would have delayed for no reason.”
The yellow eyes of the commander betrayed his shock. “No coat?”
“Whores are expected to stay at their House. We aren’t allowed to travel the city without an escort.” He was surprised the Commander didn’t know that.

I chose On Love’s Wings for the blog story. It’s been one I’ve wanted to work on for a while. 🙂 It’s a sci-fi/fantasy. I’ll be looking for pictures to go with the guys, but I thought I’d give you a little peek.
On Love’s Wings c. 2016 T.A. Chase
“You’ll come with me.”
The pronouncement caused silence to fall over the room. Everyone turned to look at Miataga. The voice came from behind him and he turned with caution. What he saw standing there made him shiver and not all of it was from fear.
The body the voice belonged to was lean and muscular. Board shoulders tapered down to a slender waist. Washboard abs revealed by the skin tight uniform the other man wore. The man’s face was hidden by a mask allowing only his eyes to show. Those eyes were yellow and fierce like a hawk Miataga had seen when he was ten. He allowed his gaze to slide leisurely down the man’s body to when a small shield hung blocking his view of the man’s groin.
Resia, sitting at the table with him, jostled him and he realized everyone was waiting to see what he would do. Raising his eyes back to meet the man’s intense scrutiny, his own widened when he noticed the helmet the stranger was wearing. A pair of stylized wings wrapped their way around the man’s head. The tips met in the middle of his forehead where a gold beak connected with them. Holy Mothers of the God, a Wing commander had claimed him. Now the shiver chasing down his spine was fear. For a second, his mouth formed the words to tell the man he wouldn’t go. Miataga caught a flicker of disappointment skitter through the unblinking gaze. It was the sign of humanness and the way the stranger stood, shoulders thrown back as if he expected Miataga to refuse him that made up Miataga’s mind.
Miataga didn’t usually make snap decisions, but he decided to go with the Commander. He held out his hand to allow the man to help him to his feet. “I’ll go with you, Commander.”
The tension in the room released like everyone had been holding their breath. Quiet conversation rose as they walked from the room. He fell in behind the stranger as they left the Loving House. He stopped outside and looked up at the building for a second. He had the strangest feeling he wouldn’t be coming back to the only home he had known.

Anubis copyright c. 2015 T.A. Chase
Part Forty-Two (last installment, but I will be adding a little more to it before it gets published)
“Umm…” He wasn’t sure what to say. There was something about the man that spoke of power and age. Jamil wondered how old Isis was.
“Far older than these youngsters.” Isis winked and Jamil blinked. “Yes, I did just read your mind. I’m sorry, but it happens when I touch people. Usually I don’t acknowledge anything I hear. It’s not polite to eavesdrop on thoughts.”
Jamil swallowed. “I guess it’s all right then.”
Isis lifted one shoulder. “You should sit. I believe I managed to heal your injuries, but you’re going to be tired for a couple of days.”
Taking a deep breath, Jamil realized his side didn’t hurt anymore and all the other areas where he was sure he’d sustained some kind of cut or bruise didn’t ache either. He weaved and Isis grabbed him around the waist to help him sit on a box Horus had dragged over.
“Are you okay?”
He glanced up to see Anubis race into the warehouse, and barely managed to get to his feet before Anubis embraced him. He grunted at the force Anubis hit him, glad that Isis had healed him or he’d pass out from the pain.
Anubis buried his face in the crook of Jamil’s neck and Jamil could feel the man trembling. Jamil tightened his hold on his lover, letting Anubis take his time to get control over his emotions. He ran his hands up and down Anubis’ back, humming softly.
When Anubis stepped back and met his gaze, Jamil smiled. “I’m fine. Your friend healed the few wounds I had.” He tilted his head in Isis’ direction. “You hang out with an interesting bunch of guys.”
They all chuckled and Anubis smiled. “They are a very unique group, but I’ll admit I wouldn’t want anyone else at my back when things go wrong.”
“The feeling is mutual,” Isis said. “We’re going to head out and drop off the guy for the police.”
“What about the book and the guy who hired these men?” Jamil wasn’t sure he wanted to leave while the man in charge of the chaos was still alive.
“The book will go back to our library and Sekhmet will take care of the other problem. Trust me. There will be nothing left to come after you or any of the other artifacts you found at Petra.” Isis sounded so sure there was no way Jamil could doubt him. “Besides Anubis will be staying with you for a while. He really is a consultant for UNESCO and he still has a job to finish.”
Jamil shot Anubis a look. “So you’re going to tell me all about the artifacts I find? Are you going to help me dig some more up?”
“Of course.” Anubis grinned. “I like getting dirty, but it’s the cleaning up part I love best.”
Everyone laughed as Jamil felt his cheeks flush. God, it was like he was twelve and dealing with his first crush. Rolling his eyes, Jamil punched Anubis in the chest.
“All right. Let’s go back to your hotel. I’m ready to clean up then rest.” He turned to the others. “Thank you all for coming to my rescue. I’m sorry I missed meeting Sekhmet. Maybe I’ll get that pleasure some day.”
“I’m not sure it would a pleasure,” Horus muttered.
With each cryptic comment each man made about Sekhmet, Jamil’s curiosity grew.
“You’ll meet him in time,” Isis replied then began to herd the others out of the warehouse. “Anubis, you know how to get a hold of us if you need us for anything.”
“Take care, brothers.”
Jamil watched as they all hugged Anubis then patted him on the shoulder as they walked by. Once they left, he turned back to Anubis who grinned at him before encircling his waist.
“Let’s go. I need to strip you naked and check to make sure you are okay.” Anubis brushed a kiss over Jamil’s cheek.
As he pressed closer, Jamil rested his head on Anubis’ shoulder. “Do your magic. I want you to take me to bed.”
Anubis chuckled. “I can do that. I’m going to keep you. You know that, right?”
“I hope so, considering I don’t blame on letting you go. It’s crazy. We’ve only known each other for a short time, but I feel like we’ve been together forever.” He frowned as he thought about how sappy that sounded.
“Why would I think it’s crazy when I feel the same way? It’s been centuries since I cared about someone like I do you. After living for as long as I have, I’ve learned love doesn’t care how many hours a couple have known each other. It all depends on how your souls connect.”
Jamil smiled. “I like the sound of that.”
“So do I.”
He closed his eyes and felt power wash over him along with the disorientation of Anubis doing whatever he did to transport them from the warehouse to the hotel. Jamil realized he was going to have to grow used to it if he wanted to stay with Anubis.

Excerpt Forty-One-
One of his captors lay crumpled on the floor near the door. He had no doubt that Horus had killed him, which didn’t bother Jamil at all. After been kidnapped and beaten, he had no sympathy or mercy for the ones who did it.
“Where are the others?” He kept his voice low, not sure who else might be close by.
“They’re waiting until I let them know you’re free. We’re going to stay in this room while they get the rest of the bastards.” Horus fell silent for a minute and Jamil wondered if he was communicating in some way with his brothers.
Horus grimaced but didn’t say anything. “Isis says they’re moving in position. Sekhmet ordered them not to kill the head guy. We’re taking him hostage and Sekhmet will use his wonderful charm to get the name of the big boss, so we can work on taking him out.”
Jamil raised his eyebrows. “You seriously think Sekhmet will be able to get the man to talk? He’s that scary?”
“If you ever get to meet him, you’ll understand why none of us have any doubt he’ll do what he says.” Horus shrugged. “I don’t know what he used to do before Sekhmet changed him, but he’s quite compelling and intense. None of us deal with him much anymore. Not that we’re the ones backing away or anything. As the centuries have passed, I think he’s getting tired.”
Jamil looked at him and Horus chuckled.
“What the fuck do I know anyway? He might just not like us.”
“I’m not doubting you. Hell, I don’t know any of you well enough to form an opinion. I’m just wondering if you were going to stop talking so we could listen to make sure no one was heading our way.” Jamil grunted when Horus pinched his arm. “Why’d you do that?”
Horus rolled his eyes. “Because I can’t punch you. Anubis is going to have a fit when he sees all your bruises.”
“I think they broke a rib or something.” Jamil pressed his hand to his side.
“Well that’s really going to piss Anubis off,” Horus muttered.
Before they say anything else, there was a shout from somewhere in the warehouse. Jamil jumped to his feet, but Horus grabbed his arm. He glared at the man who simply shook his head.
“We need to stay out of the way.”
“But you, at least, should be out there. I’m sure you’re trained in fighting like the rest of them. Give me a gun. I can protect myself. I’ll stay in the corner.” He pointed to the spot furthest away from the door. “I know how to handle a weapon. You need to get out there and help them.”
Horus didn’t look convinced. “I’m not sure. You’ve been manhandled pretty badly. To be honest, while I might be trained, I’m not really good at the whole fighting thing. Bastet is much better than me. I like sneaking around and spying on people. That’s what I did when I was normal. I was a spy.”
Jamil huffed in annoyance then decided not to argue. There were six other men out there who’d had centuries to train with each other. He had to trust that they knew what they were doing and none of them would get hurt.
Shots rang out and he dropped to his knees, even though they were nowhere near his room. Horus eased closer to the door, not sparing a glance for the man on the floor. He stepped over him then peered around the edge.
“That didn’t sound close,” Jamil spoke up after a few minutes when there weren’t any more shots.
“No. They’d be closer to the front of the building.” Horus closed his eyes then said, “Anubis is chasing one of the men down. He slipped out while they were trying to herd the others. Sekhmet got the head guy and took him. I have no idea and I’m pretty sure we’ll never see that guy again. The other men are dead.”
Relief waved through Jamil and he slumped to the ground. As much as he had trusted Anubis and his brothers to save him, a small voice in the back of his mind had kept saying that they wouldn’t be able to get him free. He had a feeling he’d die in the back room of some unknown warehouse. Yet he shouldn’t have had any doubt that Anubis would find a way to get him out without dying.
Horus touched his shoulder and Jamil looked up. “Come on. Anum said we could go out. Thoth and Bastet have taken care of the bodies. Actually, I was wrong. They kept one guy alive and they’re turning him over to the police for the murders of those guards.”
“Good. The families will get closure then,” Jamil replied as he slowly pushed to his feet. “Let’s go. I think I’m going to need to get to the hospital.”
“Don’t worry about that. One of us will be able to heal you more than likely.” Horus hesitated. “Do you need to lean on me?”
He shook his head. “No. I’ll be fine. I would really like to get out of here now.”
Horus gestured toward the door. “Come on. We’ll go to where the others are.”
Following, Jamil realized Horus had pulled a flashlight out to illuminate the way through the halls to where the building opened in one enormous room. He noticed Thoth and Amun standing next to Bastet and another man he hadn’t seen before.
“Nice job, guys. I did my part and kept Jamil safe, though someone’s going to have to look him over. The bastards beat him a little. He might have a broken rib.” Horus drew their attention.
“Come over here, Jamil.” The man Jamil didn’t know motioned to him. “I’ll check you out. I’m the only one with the strongest healing ability.”
Jamil snorted. “Is there anything you can’t do?”
“We can’t bring the dead back to life,” Bastet told him.
“Or stop time.” Amun grinned.
“Or speed up time,” Thoth jumped in.
Horus opened his mouth, but one look from the stranger stopped whatever he was going to say. When Jamil got close, the man held out his hand.
“I’m Isis. It’s nice to finally meet you, Dr. Ahlid. I’ve read some of your papers about your different digs. Quite interesting.” Isis took his hand and Jamil jumped slightly at the heat flowing from Isis’ touch.

Part Forty-
Jamil grunted when a fist landed in his stomach. “Fuckers,” he panted as he bent over. “I’m fucking blindfolded. I can’t see where the hell you’re dragging me and I don’t trust you. Of course, I’m moving slow. So quit fucking hitting me.”
“Watch your mouth.” Someone said then slapped him in the back of the head. “Stay quiet or we’ll be returning you to Anubis in pieces.”
“You do realize he’s going to be pissed when he sees how you’ve treated me. There isn’t a hole far enough away or deep enough for you to hide in. You have no idea the demon you’re about to unleash.” Jamil didn’t know how he knew how Anubis was going to react. He just did. An instinct told him Anubis would rip these men apart when he found them.
There was a harsh chuckle. “Once we have the book, he won’t be able to do anything. He’ll be too busy trying to save the rest of the pathetic humans from destruction.”
“Doesn’t that mean you’ll die as well? I’m pretty sure you’re mortal just like the rest of us.” Jamil stumbled over what he assumed was a threshold since cool air hit him.
“After our boss gets the book, he’ll make us into gods and we’ll take control of this world.”
There was a rumble that sounded like agreement from the others. Jamil didn’t know how many were still with them. Four had grabbed him from the hotel, but he was pretty sure once they subdued him, they didn’t need all of the men to watch him.
He forced a laugh. “You really believe the man who hired you is going to give you that much power? You’re way dumber than I thought you were.”
Another hard punch to his side and he bit back a yell. It felt like something gave—maybe a rib or his kidney. His knees threatened to buckle and one of the men yanked on his arm to keep him upright.
“I fucking told you. Do any more damage to me and it won’t matter if you are gods or not, Anubis will rip off your heads and put them on pikes before chopping your bodies into little pieces to feed to the sharks.” Jamil really didn’t know how Anubis would kill them. He simply understood that none of them would live to tell the tale.
“You seem so sure of Anubis’ feelings for you. Maybe he was only using you to get close to the dig, so he could find the book. Did you ever think of that?”
Actually he never once considered Anubis using him to get to the artifacts. There had always been a slight reluctance to Anubis’ actions and once he explained who he had been, Jamil had been amazed he’d even agreed to come to Petra.
“He didn’t need to sleep with me to find the book. I’m sure it would’ve been far easier not to do that. I am positive that he cares for me enough not to want me hurt and to punish those who injure me.” Jamil slammed into a metal shape. “Maybe you should be a little more careful. If you kill me before you convince Anubis to give you the book, then you’ll never see it again. It’ll disappear from the earth.”
“Don’t worry, boy. Anubis has already agreed to our terms. We’re to meet up with him and he’ll give us the book for you. I must admit I’m shocked that his fellow warriors would be willing to make that deal. They hold no love for you.”
He heard a car door open then he was shoved inside. Wiggling around, Jamil managed to sit on the seat while processing what the man had said. The brothers were going to give up the book to get Jamil back. That was crazy. He wasn’t special—or important enough—to hand over a book that could destroy the world. What are they thinking? I don’t want to be responsible for the end of life as we know it.
Silence fell around him as the car was started then pulled away from wherever they’d been keeping him. Jamil wanted to talk to Anubis again, plead with him not to make the exchange. He was willing to forfeit his life if it meant keeping others safe.
It seemed like forever before the car stopped and they dragged him out by his arm. He shuffled his feet, unsure of his surroundings and not wanting to break his ankle in a pothole. It was bad enough his entire body ached from the beatings the men administrated when they kidnapped him. Any more wounds would just be adding insult to injury.
“The building is clear, sir.”
“Good. Put him in the far back room and stay with him. I want the rest of you spread around the perimeter. Keep your eyes and ears open. They are like ghosts and sneak up on you. Make sure that doesn’t happen.” The man in charge ordered.
“Yes, sir.”
Jamil was marched across the floor of some kind of warehouse, though it was only a guess by how the noises echoed around. He found himself pushed into a chair. His arms were still tied behind his back and he wore the blindfold, which annoyed the shit out of him.
No noise drifted back to whatever room they’d stuck him in. Occasionally, he could hear the man guarding him cough or shift his feet, but that was all. It was as though he were in a black hole, sucking up all the life around him.
Suddenly there was a thud in front of him then very light footsteps heading his way. He tensed, wishing he wasn’t tied up so he could defend himself. The person eased around the chair and Jamil felt the touch of cold steel against his wrists.
“These men are idiots. They know what we can do and yet they don’t search the corners or the rafters for animals.” The voice muttered near his ear while the knife sliced through the ropes holding him.
“You’re not Anubis,” Jamil whispered as he slowly brought his arms to his sides and flexed his fingers.
“No. I’m Horus and it’s my job to watch over you while the others take care of these men.” Horus tugged the blindfold off.
Jamil blinked as his eyes adjusted to the low light in the room.
