Pimping Books…

I like this cover. πŸ™‚ I picked up the book at Torquere Press on Wednesday. Animal Attraction is an anthology of stories featuring animals, but not shapeshifters or anything like that. Just regular animals that help bring men together. The stories were pretty good.

There’s a book at Loose-Id I’ve been looking at. I like the cover, but I’m not completely sold on the story. Venom’s Bond is the book. If any of you have picked it up and read it already, please let me know what you thought of it. I guess more than anything it’s the content warning that makes me hesitate. It sounds like it’s a very intense story and I’m not quite in the mood yet to read that type of story. So I’m going to put it on my to-buy list and I’ll pick it up when I’m in the mood. But I’d still like to hear your opinions, if you’ve read it.

I’ve been doing my level best to finish The Vanguard. To answer Gina’s question from yesterday’s comments, I’ll probably end the story on the blog first, though at the rate I’m writing, the expanded version might just be finished before the blog story. I’m going to work on it this weekend to see how far I can get.

Hope everyone has a great Friday.

Thank you to everyone who left comments. Wow…I have to admit I didn’t expect this kind of response. I think I’m going to keep VB on my to-buy list. I might not pick it up right away, but since I think it’s her first novel, I’d be willing to give her a chance. When I get around to reading it, I’ll definitely let everyone know. πŸ™‚

TA, picked up Venom’s bond the other day. I thought it was pretty decent, but it came across to me as either 1) a first novel written by the author or 2) the first novel written in a series that is meant to be purely an introduction novel. All in all, I thought it was ok, and would be open to reading another by this author as long as the story arc was continued at a slightly faster pace. To be honest, the ending felt rushed, like the author realized “Uh-oh, I’m almost at the length I was contracted for, and my heros haven’t even met… I better get that done, since this is supposed to be a romance.”

Overall summary, I’ll give her another chance, but I’m not sure beyond that.

Venom’s Bond was not poorly written but in no way is it gay and even romance. It’s basically about women sexually torturing men, two guys running away together because they were both gay and the women would have eventually killed them. Then the writer dumps any potential love relationship developing between them by killing one off and having the other one get together with a lizard alien out of gratitude was the best I could guess for motivation.

It was far too long confusing and not sexy in the least.

I also got the Venom’s Bond, I felt that the first part of the story was all buildup and somewhat disturbing at that and the ‘romance’ part if you could call it that was all in the last 20 pages or so and didn’t make a whole lot of sense. Also there was no underlying motivation for the extreme essentially evil nature/behavior of the characters, much of it didn’t ring true at least to me. There was a stated motivation but I never felt it, didn’t buy into it, and had a hard time suspending disbelief. Also there were secondary characters where a motivation might have been approached but then it was never explained. All in all not a terrible book but not an author I’m going to be running out and buying again real soon. I normally read straight through and this one I put down and read other books and then finished it.

After reading the opinions here, I might have to check out the book. πŸ™‚

heyya TA-Sweetie – i was in the mood for something different and enjoyed it. the lizard alien sex interaction was done so i didn’t find it offensive – along the lines of Laura’s “Details of the Hunt”… except maybe a bit more alien even. I thought the psychogical trauma that had to be overcome was handled well, considering what the foundaiton of the story was. Certainly not something everyone would enjoy, but I enjoy characters that have to reassess their take on the world, on reality, on themselves. And I thought the final romantic resolution was moving. If you don’t like somewhat bizarre and different or traumatized characters it would definitely not be your cup of tea.

What happened to “Lyva’s Chance”, the first book in the Blood of Eden series?

Soapbox post from 3-13-06: I had an idea, it’s at abookdragon.blogspot.com. Post is titled A new way to Marry for ALL couples.

I just need to add to it that tax forms and stuff need to change the “married” to “Partnership”.

    What do you think?

I read Mrs. Giggles review. Not going to get Venom’s Bond any time soon, there are too many others to spend my time and money on. I like the idea, don’t mind the lizard sex, it’s the, from Mrs. Giggles, “All men are kept in the men’s compound to service the women who run things as if they are brutal prison guards in some B-grade exploitative prison drama” and the treatment of the men that bugs me.

If you end up getting it, don’t forget to let us know what you think.

    TA,
I’m going to have to agree with Yvonne on this put Venom’s Blood on the bottom of your to buy list. It is a bit much. I started reading it and had stop and start again, while I don’t mind twists and turns it has to be because it’s headed to a sensible ending. And I can’t say I was too happy when it got there. Now Soul Mates 3 Wrapped up some story threads and picked up others and gave you a satisfying ending while making you want to see what’s coming up next.

I think this is a case of “great minds…”

I’ve got Animal Attraction on my “want to purchase” list and also thought about purchasing Venom’s Bond but the warning made me think twice about it.

Thank you for the answer πŸ™‚ loving the story.

    Have a great weekend.

I have bought Nica Berry’s book, but like you, the warning has made me think and I haven’t read it yet… and I don’t know if I will read it in the next future. I have also bough Jourdan Lane’s SM3 and Animal Attraction. ciao, elisa

Hi TA- I picked up Venom’s Blood a couple of days ago. I can’t recommend it. The premise is good, but the characters don’t pop and the “love” between the main character and his “mate” just didn’t make any sense. The violence although not gratuitous, it is a bit much. Also the outcome of the original “lovers” makes no sense- why did she take that way out for them???? Bottom line-DON’T GO THERE.
Instead I would highly recommend the 3rd of the SoulMates series by Jourdan Lane. She has kept the story line fresh and things move rapidly!
You GO Guy! Good luck with the writing this weekend.
