Poetry Train #76

Storm

copyrighted c. 2008 T.A. Chase

Rain pounding on my window pane wakes me from my dreams. I climb from the bed, carefully tucking the blankets back around you. My toes curl from the cold floor as I move to the window and curl up on the seat to stare out of the water-streaked glass. The cool drafts sneaking in from around the window dance upon my chilled skin. I snag a blanket from a chair and wrap myself in it, watching the lightning dance along the sky. In the flash of each bolt, I see a figure standing on a hill. With each crack as the night becomes as bright as day, the person’s face becomes clearer to me.

Handsome beyond imagining, his black eyes swirl like the abyss he stands above. His dark hair dances upon the storm exploding around him. He wants me and my spirit calls to him. I rest my hand against the smooth glass and he raises his hand in response. A cruel smile races across his face and I shiver, knowing this stranger on the hill could own all of me if I venture outside during the storm.

“Love,” you call from the bed. “The storm wake you?”

I turn to flash a smile in your direction. “Yes. You know I can’t sleep during them.”

You sit up, letting the blankets pool around your waist, giving my eyes a broad chest to devour. Holding your hand out to me, you plead, “Come back to bed, love. You’ll get chilled sitting by the window.”

I can never refuse you, so I stand, leaving the blanket to rest on the seat I vacate. Drifting closer to you, I’m called one last time to look out the window. In a flash of white heavenly light, I see him standing there still and waiting. I hesitate, caught between the man on the hill and you in my bed.

“Love.” Your voice is low and insistent, ordering me back to your arms without words.

I slide under the blankets and snuggle against your warm body. You surround me with warmth and solidness. I let you anchor me to this room and our bed. Yet even while I fall under your spell once more, I hear his voice echoing in my head like thunder.

“Soon, my heart. Soon you’ll come back to me.”

In the quietness of my soul, I know those words are true. Soon the storm will grow too strong and I’ll break free of the magic you have cast to keep me with you. I’ll leave this house, returning to the chaos you captured me from and the arms of the man who owns me for eternity.

  1. great put up, very informative. I wonder why the other experts of this sector do not understand this.
You must proceed your writing. I am sure, you have a great
    readers’ base already!

Woa, that was deep and spooky and really cool.

    It’s fitting for October!

    Oh wow. O_O
This just left me breathless in every way and wanting to know more about the situation of the characters. I found myself wanting the storm to win at the end because who can resist the darker side of your soul? You have such a cool mind and imagination. Thanks!

    Kimi and Melissa,

I have the feeling there is more to this story then what I’ve written here. I’ll have to come back to it when I have some free time…lol. (not that I have any, but I’m sure I could fit the story in somewhere at some point)

Actually when I first started writing it, I thought it would fit in with To Hell with the Devil, a urban fantasy I’m writing, but it ended up not having the right tone for that story. Guess I’ll have to create a story around it.

  8. Melissa Bradley says:

This was very magical and very powerful. I want to know more! You have to turn this into one of your amazing stories. And I agree with Jambrea, you have the magic.

  9. Kimi says:

That was beautiful. It would be a great story. Hint.Hint. Please!!! It’s like one of those stories I read as a kid where you picked your own ending.

  10. T.A.Chase says:

    Thanks, Yvonne.

There’s a dream-like quality about this scene that I was really trying for. Those moments at night when you’re awake and you know there’s something out in the dark, but is it dangerous or something you could love? Most of us never want to find out…lol..in case it’s something scary.

  11. Yvonne says:

Wow! So few words and you have me wanting more!
There is definitely a power within you TA and I am very glad you reach out to touch us with it.

    Yvonne

  12. T.A.Chase says:

    ah-h-h, thanks Jambrea.

As I was writing this, I couldn’t decide who the “villian” was. No matter how I described the man on the hill, is he really a bad guy or is the man in the bed the bad guy? I guess I’ll leave it up to the reader…unless I do something with this later and make it longer.

  13. Jambrea says:

Oh TA! How beautiful and bittersweet. You’ve drawn me in again. I think it is you who has the magic.
