Part Forty-One-

The shock of seeing Rissa through Zach’s eyes almost jolted me out of my meditation, but I managed to hold on to the connection. My sister was thin, way too thin. Had they not being feeding her anything? Or had she been starving herself for some reason I didn’t know?

::Why is your man here, Raven?::

Rissa’s voice ripped through my head, but I didn’t let her anger distract me.

::What the fuck happened to you? Why didn’t you let me know about this?::

::There was nothing you could do at the moment, but now that your guy’s here, I assume you’ll be arriving soon.::

I frowned. ::How do you know he’s my guy?::

I watched her snarl at Zach and the doctor Zach had greeted, before dropping her head back down. Yet she continued to stare at them through the greasy locks of hair hanging in front of her face.

::I know he’s yours because he reeks of you. Did you take out Gideon and the rebels? It’s been quite the topic around here.::

I didn’t answer her. I hadn’t thought about the fact that other Opalites would be able to smell my scent on Zach. Thank God, humans hadn’t developed the advanced olfactory abilities we had, or else Zach would’ve ended up in the cell with Rissa.

::Hold on, Rissa. I’ll be there in a little while. I have an idea how to get there, and you were right. The jewel is at the same facility you’re at. I’ll stop by and let you out while I’m on my way to picking up the jewel.::

::And freeing your boyfriend as well?::

::Yes, Rissa, I’ll be taking Zach with us as we leaving the facility.::

I focused my attention on Zach and spoke just to him. ::As you’ve guessed, that’s my sister Rissa. Don’t allow them to kill her. I’m coming to get you both.::

::You need to stay safe, Raven. I’m not sure heading straight here is the best thing to do.::

::Don’t worry. I’ve been planning this for years, Zach. I’m not going to rush in and get caught. It’s not only you and Rissa depending on me. There are others expecting me to free them.::

I pushed to my feet and glanced around the apartment. I had looked around right after Zach had left, and found his supplies.

::Both of you keep your heads down and I’ll let you know when I’ve arrived.::

Easing my hold on our connections, I pushed them to the back of my mind. I’d be able to monitor them, but be able to function without them eavesdropping on what I was doing.

I packed one bag, making sure it wasn’t too heavy. After checking to see if the area was clear, I left Zach’s hiding place. Everything looked the way it should have been if no one had come around. I made my way to the top of the building and studied the dark sky. Thank God, it was dark out, or else I would’ve had to wait until the next night.

I stripped and tucked my clothes into the bag. I probably could have left them there, since when I got to the facility, I wasn’t going go back to my human form right away.

Closing my eyes, I took a deep breath and allowed my wings to take their fully-fledged form from my back. Zach had seen only one stage of my wings. The ones unfurling from my shoulder blades were black feathers edged in sliver. I flexed the right muscles and they flapped. It had been a long time since I’d flown anywhere. It hadn’t been too difficult to get a chance while we lived in the mountains. There weren’t many people around, and those who were knew to keep their mouths shut. Being in the city and on the run from the government had ensured my wings stayed hidden.

I clasped the handles of the bag in one hand and launched my body off the roof. The sensation of falling didn’t last long before my wings caught the air, and I flew away.

My inner GPS kept me going in the right direction, and I flew high enough, I doubted anyone would have been able to make my shape out in the night sky. One of the other genetic adaptations for Opalites was our skin pigment became black as our wings feathers when our wings were visible. So we blended into the darkness far easier.

::I’m on my way.:: I let Rissa and Zach know.

::How can you already be heading to us? Did you leave right after they took me?:: Zach sounded confused.

::Be careful. You can’t travel during the day, so you’re going to need a place to rest.:: Rissa was the practical one.

::I know, and I already have that taken care of. Zach, just know I’m coming. Do as they ask, and see what you can find out from them. I need to know what they know about us.::

Rissa’s snort echoed through my head. ::I can tell you that. They know jackshit about us, Raven. All they have are memories from people who were young when we came to earth. They might have captured a few of us, but even killing and dissecting us doesn’t help them figure us out.::

::I still would like to make sure they don’t know anything, Rissa. Zach’s in the best position to find that out for us. If you’re willing to do that.::

::Sure, I can flatter Sankui and get him to talk to me about his research. He’s been dying to tell me all the marvelous things he’s found out.::

::Thanks, love. I have to go. Stay safe. Remember I love both of you.::

I pulled away from their thoughts, and paid attention to where I was going to land. I had another hour or so of darkness before the sun started to rise, and I needed to be on the ground and under cover by then.
